Cal Poly Can—Rebrand

Cal Poly Can is a podcast put on by Cal Poly’s College of Science and Mathematics that shows off the college’s faculty and staff and the amazing things they’re working on all the time. The podcast was initially kicked off in 2020 and has featured the likes of professors, faculty chairs, and many more.

Furthermore, a rebrand of Cal Poly Can was in order towards the end of the summer of 2021. My boss at the time, Tony Turretto, and I began to envision a completely revamped podcast experience that turned every episode into an event, and a platform that truly showed off what Cal Poly was capable of. This vision was worked on sporadically throughout the ensuing fall quarter before another student intern, Devan Spiegel, joined the effort. From that point on, we focused more on the content surrounding each individual episode.

Although a lot of the ideas that were conceptualized during this rebrand have yet to be implemented, the groundwork for this podcast has been laid out for a bright future. Featured ahead will be the process for ideating a new logo, and the process of creating all relevant visuals for a Cal Poly Can episode.

A huge thank you to Tony Turretto and Devan Spiegel for working with me to develop my ideas and vision for this platform.
Once the logomark was in good shape, the cover art for the podcast was ready to be revamped. Unlike the polished logomarks that I put together, my boss and I wanted the cover art to be more edgy and loose. This was to emphasize each of the podcast subject’s personalities, as well as to get people talking about the podcast.
Although a lot of the cover art that I’ve come up with has yet to be published, one of them that has been published was for Dr. Erin Pearse, a mathematics professor at Cal Poly. Because of the fast-paced nature of these episodes’ production, I had to work fast and forgo a lot of my usual process. Below is the final cover art and its digital applications.
